On this occasion, Jose María explains how we do trellised pruning (Cordón Royat) in the Syrah variety vineyard from which we harvest the grapes to make our organic wine Siós Nature (without added sulphites).

As we have already explained in other posts, pruning the vineyard mainly consists of maintaining a balance between the production of grapes and the vegetative part of the plant. The initial objective of Royat pruning is the formation of the vine and later the control of its production.

The vine trellis pruning system seeks for each plant to have two main axes and for the vines to be supported on wires supported by stakes stuck into the ground. These stakes give a completely linear structure to the vineyard, which allows the grapes to be harvested using mechanical grape harvesters when necessary.

Advantages of Cordon Royat pruning

Cordon pruning of the grape vines has various advantages in the cultivation of the vineyard, especially with regard to the prevention of pests and diseases and the cultivation of the vine.

- Aeration and sun exposure of the vines: both at the level of aeration and sun exposure for the ripening of the grapes, Royat pruning allows both, which makes it a very interesting training system to prevent possible diseases.

- Mechanization of the harvest: the Royat pruning system allows mechanizing the harvest in such a way that labor costs are greatly reduced and the grade of the grape can be further adjusted.

- Pruning time: Royal pruning is quick and simple, this makes it easy to do and less expensive, both physically and economically (less pruning time).
