On August 16, our 2022 grape harvest began in the Pla del Molí vineyard with the Pinot Noir variety, the basis of our sparkling Siós Brut Rosé and Siós Brut Blanc de Noirs. We leave you a compilation of photos wishing you like them and we'll tell you a little about the particularities of this grape variety.

Pinot Noir

Pinot noir is a variety of wine grape (Vitis vinifera). The name derives from French words pine (pineapple) and noir (black). The term pine is due to the fact that the clusters of this variety have a narrow and conical shape like a pineapple. The noir is because of the color of the grapes.

Pinot noir grows all over the world, especially in cold regions, although it is mostly associated with the Burgundy region of France. Other wine-growing regions have built a reputation for Pinot Noir, including Oregon's Willamette Valley, Carneros, the Central Coast and Russian River area of California, South Africa's Walker Bay region, Tasmania, and the Valley of Yarra of Australia and the Central Otago, Martinborough and Marlborough regions of New Zealand. Pinot noir is also a grape used for the production of sparkling wine in the Champagne region and in other wine regions.

Here, in the DO Costers del Segre Pinot Noir is also produced, although in smaller quantities.

The Pinot Noir variety is considered to produce some of the most elegant wines in the world, but it is a difficult variety to grow and vinify as it requires diligent maintenance of the canopy (the green part of the plant). Its thin skin and low levels of phenolic compounds cause Pinot Noir to produce wines with a light color, medium body and low tannins. The wines of this variety have an uneven and unpredictable aging where they can go through a mute phase (where the flavors and smells are not appreciated). When young, Pinot Noir wines tend to have red fruit aromas, such as cherries, raspberries, and strawberries. As they age, vegetal aromas can develop.
